The Glasgow schools PPP project began on 3rd August 2000. It was the largest PFI project in Europe. The contract covers the maintenance, cleaning and facilities management of 29 high schools and one primary school throughout Glasgow.
The Glasgow schools contract was the first educational PFI won by Amey. After several years of success, Glasgow schools are now a template for all Scottish Educational PFI projects.
The contract came about through Glasgow City Council’s ambition to improve their pupils’ environment. Part of the PFI plans called for the 38 secondary schools to be reduced to 29. Each school’s capacity would then be increased.
This called for modern, well-managed facilities that served the wider community as well as the school. This was only achieved through extended janitorial provision supplied by Amey.
Amey employees, many of whom are TUPE transfers from Glasgow City Council, continue to provide janitorial and cleaning services to the schools. Our newly awarded Investors in People accreditation reflects our commitment to providing them with clear career paths throughout Amey.
Other services are subcontracted to service partners, but plans for increased self-delivery expansion are progressing.
Amey prides itself on excellent relations, at management and school levels, with Glasgow City Council and Local Education Partnership, 3ED and has recently successfully completed its first benchmarking exercise to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
Amey is committed to maintaining the educational environment of over 32,000 pupils in 12 new-build and 17 refurbished buildings.
The schools we provide service to are all unique in their educational environments, and include Bellahoustan Schools of Sporting Excellence and Knightswood School of Dance, which are now respected institutions in Scottish Education. Each of the schools on the Glasgow estate specialise in specific areas of excellence creating focal points for us to support and place future initiatives.
All on the contract continue to maintain good working relationships with the schools and we look forward to continuously improving the contract for its duration.
