Three words describe my personal experience of Amey: demanding, inspiring and fulfilling. Every step of my journey since joining the company in December 2000 has given me a real sense of achievement.
As Facilities Manager for Amey’s Scottish schools contracts, I ensure that all calls that come into our helpdesk are dealt with effectively. Central to my role is working closely with internal teams and contractors to make certain that our customers are happy with the service we provide.
I joined Amey working on the Glasgow Schools Public Private Partnership (PPP) contract. Over subsequent years my role has broadened in scope and I now have the same responsibilities within other contracts. The role I play has developed my understanding of commercial management and reporting, and helped me to gain a detailed PPP contractual knowledge to ultimately allow me to take increased responsibility when dealing with contractors and customers.
Such is the nature and diversity of Amey’s business, working here has allowed me to develop my own path. There is nothing stereotypical about the career route of an Amey employee. One thing that is consistent however is the effort Amey puts into ensuring all staff has every opportunity to develop, as well as supporting employees to develop on their own through various learning options.
There are a number of initiatives to assist employee development. Amey runs a dedicated scheme for a select number of people across the group for Fast Track development. My acceptance onto the scheme not only gave me a real sense of achievement but will allow me to develop new skills and progress through the company.
A lot can change within a company like Amey within a year never mind five however one certainty is development.
One of the things that makes my work rewarding is the team I have around me. The team in Glasgow is excellent and everyone seems to really get along. Although everyone is dedicated to their own role there is a willingness to assist and help others where required. Everyone is welcoming to newcomers, visitors and old hands alike. The nights out both organised and unorganised can be most enjoyable as well!
I would recommend Amey to anyone who does not want to be stereo typed or tied down to a specific job. Anyone who wants to work for a company with a vast diversity of contracts should consider Amey as a real option. Working for Amey gives you an opportunity to see a huge array of different worlds and with expansion into further areas you need never be bored. Changing jobs across the group is a reality meaning that you could join a PPP contract and move to a FM contract or a highways contract whenever a suitable position arises.
