I am an Electrical Supervisor for the Walsall Street Lighting contract. I've worked for Amey for over four years and during that time my role has developed signficiantly, in terms of supervisory responsibility and understanding more about the business.
I was initially involed in the mobilisation of the contract as an operative. From the outset I played a crucial operational role, heavily involved in the maintenance activities undertaken by Amey as part of the contract to replace the street lighting stock. I'm now responsible for monitoring health and safety practicies and have supervisory responsiblity for a large team of operatives, general operatives and electricians.
One of the most important things to me is feeling part of a team. Good teamwork is something that is heavily valued at Amey and really motivates me in my work. There is an extremely good working relationship between the operatives and the office staff and a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, but also a real sense that we are all working hard together to do our best for the business and the customers we serve.
I really enjoy the variety in my role and the opportunity to work from different sites everyday and get out and about in the local community. It means that I can really get in touch with the public that we help everyday.
My promotion to Electrical Supervisor within three years shows that the opportunities for getting on with your career are a reality at Amey. I've had a great deal of mentoring and support from the Contract Manager. Amey as a whole seems extremely supportive of people learning new skills.
Because we are constantly bidding for new business there are also always opportunities to bring your skills and expertise to new challenges in different locations and serving different customers.
The reward scheme is something that has had a real impact on my team, in terms of motivating us to do better and making us feel that our contributions to the business are valued. My team were awarded at our annual award ceremony and invited to attend an awards night to receive our prize. We all felt a real sense of pride in winning the award and realised how crucial we all are to the success of the organisation. It means a lot working for an organisation that says thank you for your hard work.
