Keith Cottrell, Managing Director

Keith Cottrell is Managing Director of Amey Ventures, the company’s Private Finance Initiative (PFI) Bidding and Investment unit which heads up all Public Private Partnership (PPP) projects.

Keith Cottrell began his career in Civil Engineering at Derbyshire County Council. He moved to the Welsh Water Authority where he worked for almost 15 years in engineering and senior management roles before his appointment as Managing Director of a company dealing primarily in pipeline construction, general civil and mechanical projects.

In 1995 Keith was appointed Director at Hyder Investments. He had responsibility for negotiating contract terms and was involved at Board level in the on-going management of the strategic direction of the business. He successfully grew an equity portfolio, including the MOD Main Building and the pioneering Docklands Light Railway PFI. He also negotiated three major road deals as Chairman of UK Highways, including the M40 project, and managed a variety of smaller transactions and joint venture partnerships in the UK, Mainland Europe and Asia.

Keith moved to the Bank of Ireland in 2000 as a Director, primarily acting as a lead arranger in project finance transactions in the infrastructure, power and telecoms sectors. As Project Director Keith gained significant experience in structuring and financing PFIs and PPPs and successfully closed a number of deals, including the London Underground PPP and the M40 refinancing. He played a key role in establishing the bank as a lead arranger in the London market.

Keith joined Amey in 2002 as Managing Director for Amey Ventures Ltd., the part of the business responsible for bidding for long term PFI, PPP and Private Sector opportunities. Keith managed the strategic direction of the business, whilst sourcing and negotiating senior debt and capital markets funding for major projects. A key aspect of the role was also the selection of strategic joint venture partners.

Keith successfully retained Amey’s position on a number of key bids prior to Ferrovial’s acquisition of Amey and has closed ten major projects across a range of sectors including highways, schools and defence.

In 2005 Keith became Managing Director of Amey Tube Services, formed as an operating division of Amey in June of that year to manage Amey’s investment and operational interests in Tube Lines. In this role Keith assumed full profit and loss for Tube Lines within Amey.

In late 2006 Keith again took on responsibility for Amey Ventures Ltd whilst remaining on the Tube Lines Holding Company board.

Keith’s main hobby is Scuba diving. He is a certified PADI Divemaster and a qualified Technical Diver with TDI. He also enjoys running and playing squash.
